Underwater Living by 2027?

Underwater Living by 2027?

Check out this incredible news story featured on CNN.

The idea is to live underwater in modules.  This is the UK company, DEEP.  Their next generation of underwater living is called Sentinel:

Would you live like this?  Easily descend via submarine to an underwater house?  Add modules to create larger habitats, or even entire towns?  Swim outside and explore the submarine environment?

And what about work? Would you possibly farm fish or kelp? Or mine important ore, while living near the mineral source?

Sound familiar?

I wrote extensively about “saturation living” in The Rise of Oceania.  What that means is that the habitat is pressurized to match the outside environment perfectly.  Inhabitants could go in and out without depressurizing, through an open hatch at the bottom of the structure (or a “moonpool”).  According to their website, this system is designed to exist at the pressure of the surrounding water, though it does not specify at what depth.  The “saturation” means that the inhabitant’s tissues would be fully saturated with gases at that pressure, and therefore they couldn’t swim to the surface without depressurizing first.

I love the concept of underwater living, and I love the idea of Sentinel being modular. Underwater living is on the horizon.  In The Rise of Oceania, the depth the inhabitants live at is thirty meters, or four atmospheres of pressure.  The future I postulated is rapidly becoming reality.

In recent weeks, I have posted the following articles.  All point toward a need for nations of the world to further our expansion out into the oceans, and to alter our economies and industries to make use of this massive resource on our planet that, in area, is twice the size of Mars:

Ocean Polymetallic Nodules are Essential for Sustained Technological Development on Earth

Underwater Turbines to Power Our Cities and Industry

Kelp Can be Used to Create Plastic

Here is the original story, from CNN on 18 March 2025.  As industry begins to note the wealth of mineral and aquacultural resources in the oceans, I have no doubt that stories like this are going to appear more frequently.  After all, we need to live near to where we work, and industry and the thirst for new resources to fuel growing populations is going to take us to the oceans.

It’s inevitable.

There is a good summary of pioneering efforts in underwater living over at DEEP, written by Phil Short.  Click the pic below:

A Blanket of Steel from Timothy S. Johnston and Fitzhenry & Whiteside, Ltd.

Book Cover & Jacket Copy:

AN UNSTOPPABLE THREAT!

A mysterious assassin has murdered Cliff Sim, Chief Security Officer of the underwater colony, Trieste. Cliff was a mountain of a man, highly trained, and impossible to defeat in combat. And yet …

Someone brutally beat him and left his broken body in a secret Chinese facility at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean.

And included a calling card for Truman McClusky, Mayor of Trieste.

Taunting him.

Mac has led the underwater colonies in their fight against the world’s superpowers. Climate change has devastated the surface; nations suffer famine, drought, rebellion, rising waters, and apocalyptic coastal flooding. But now, as Mac leads the underwater colonies to freedom and independence, he’s faced with the gravest threat of his life: a Russian assassin, hellbent on killing Mac and everyone he cares for. Now Mac must uncover the identity of the killer, face him in combat, and at the same time lead people in battle against the largest underwater force ever assembled. It’s Mac’s final test, and to win the war, he must use every tool at his disposal, including the most surprising and devastating underwater weapons ever invented.

If Mac fails, all hope is lost for the future of human colonization on the ocean floors.

But the assassin could be anyone …

Watch your back, Mac.

A Blanket of Steel is the most gripping thriller yet in The Rise of Oceania.
