Stand By Me is Returning to Theatres this Month

Wonderful news today at Life After Gateway, especially if you have children aged twelve and up.

I say that because Stand By Me is the film of a generation. I have written about it before, most notably here, for my post These Movies Turn Forty this Year and here, for a post about Rob Reiner’s tragic murder.

Recently, I saw a comment by someone who asked, “Which generation? The 1950s or the 1980s?” And the response? “Exactly.” It not only speaks to a time of both generations, but truly of any generation; the film is timeless. In my article about movies that turn forty this year, I wrote this:

Ah, Stand By Me. It is tough to write about this film, because I feel it on such a visceral level. It’s about the loss of childhood and innocence, and how boys grow to men and largely lose the lighthearted nature of those early times and, due to escalating responsibilities of manhood and work and growing families, abandon connections with friends from those days. Perhaps it’s why I work so hard at maintaining close relationships with my childhood friends. I’m unsure. However, it’s a wonderful film that every child — at the cusp of becoming a teen — should see.

I still feel those words. The news that Stand By Me is coming back to theatres in March is welcome. I plan on taking my daughters. At the very least, I think it’s an important message to never lose touch with childhood friends, and to always hold to the memories of those early days when life seemed simpler and filled with more innocence … before we understood the reality of what this world is really like. It’s important to understand why those memories are important and why we need to maintain friendships, especially of those who understand the journeys that we have endured, and vice versa.

I can only speak about my own journey, however … about my own life and experiences. I understand that. I speak only from my perspective on life, and I can’t do that for others. That’s for you to decide.

Stand By Me will be out on 27 March 2026 for one week only. Here is the IMDB page, where the film is rated 8.1 with nearly 500,000 ratings. The official description:

A writer recounts a childhood journey with his friends to find the body of a missing boy.

Stephen King wrote the original work the film is based on: The Body. This, along with The Shawshank Redemption, are widely considered the best adaptations of his writing.
