Quick Spoiler-Free Thoughts on Squid Game Season 2

In short, they nailed it.
The writer, director, producers, and actors all delivered. It is a great follow-up to Season 1. The story is a progression from the ending of the previous finale, and the events here aren’t just more of the same.
This show became a cultural phenomenon a few years back, so much so that people had to watch it just to be a part of the conversation. It’s kind of what happened with Survivor twenty-five years ago, which at the time was called a “Watercooler Show,” meaning people would chat about it while taking a break at work and standing around the water cooler. (It’s an old term.) The same thing happened with Squid Game, but of course this show is much more violent and mature. People everywhere were talking about it, and I’m sure it motivated many to subscribe to Netflix just to watch it.
The thing that captivated me about Squid Game the first time around was that there would be scenes with incredible tension and enormous stakes on the line, then suddenly there’d be a flash of humour, then an abrupt outburst of violence and extreme gore, then right back to some humour, then another bit of tension, then more gore … all in the span of just a few seconds. It hit the viewer so fast, it was almost like a machine gun stutter the way it pummeled us. That was the entire point, and it worked brilliantly. It was simultaneously shocking and satisfying. And it wasn’t just a fleeting thing. It happened frequently during the show, certainly during each game, and then often when the players were in their barracks as well. When I started watching Season 2, I was worried that things would not feel the same. I was also concerned that the events would just be a rehash of the first story. Well, I’m happy to report they’re not. Things feel like Squid Game still, but there are many differences, new characters, new situations, and …
Well, that’s all I’m going to say. When I hit the end of Episode 3, I realized that they’d done it. They’d recaptured the essence of what made the original so great.
Go watch it now. Avoid spoilers. Don’t research anything about it until after you’ve seen all seven episodes.
