Currently Working on Star Trek Model Kit AMT 1457 M/06 USS Reliant

I had stalled for a bit on this one, but I’m finally plugging away on it again.

As you may know, since I reconnected with model-making as a creative outlet, I have focused only on building TOS model kits.  In fact, it’s even more specific than that:  for nostalgia, I have only created model kits released by AMT, the original producer of them since way back in the late 1960s.  Some of the vessels seen on the show — in the background, through viewports for example — were these very same models.  So far I have made a few and written about them here at Life After Gateway:

Enterprise (Part 1)

Klingon D-7 “Alien” Battle Cruiser

Romulan Bird of Prey

Station K-7

And here is the display, in my office where I write:

And the full view:

It’s quite inspiring, seeing these models around my house.  The show meant a lot to me while growing up. So far, the most difficult model to build was Enterprise. The most challenging decal-application was the Bird of Prey. And the most rewarding was Station K-7, seen here:

Following Station K-7, I moved away from TOS on TV, and entered the movie era of Star Trek.  I thought I would start with USS Reliant and then USS Enterprise (refit) from Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan.  Recalling this iconic first contact between these two ships, I thought it would be excellent to recreate the face-off on a shelf somewhere in my house:

Despite my love for Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan, I immediately found that I was just not as inspired by Reliant as I had been by the previous TOS models.  I found my attention lagging, then drifted away from the hobby when other writing projects became more pressing.  Life grew more demanding in many ways as well.

I am happy to report to you that I am now back on Reliant, and should have it completed shortly.  Here are a few in-process images of the ship.  Most of the hull is now together and painted Tamiyah’s Neutral Gray, as are the other starship hulls in my collection:

It’s a very demanding decal page.  I’m hoping to get to it by next week perhaps, but for now I have to paint the fine details and then apply TS-13 clear coat to even out the hull surface.  Watch this space!

A Blanket of Steel from Timothy S. Johnston and Fitzhenry & Whiteside, Ltd.

Book Cover & Jacket Copy:

AN UNSTOPPABLE THREAT!

A mysterious assassin has murdered Cliff Sim, Chief Security Officer of the underwater colony, Trieste. Cliff was a mountain of a man, highly trained, and impossible to defeat in combat. And yet …

Someone brutally beat him and left his broken body in a secret Chinese facility at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean.

And included a calling card for Truman McClusky, Mayor of Trieste.

Taunting him.

Mac has led the underwater colonies in their fight against the world’s superpowers. Climate change has devastated the surface; nations suffer famine, drought, rebellion, rising waters, and apocalyptic coastal flooding. But now, as Mac leads the underwater colonies to freedom and independence, he’s faced with the gravest threat of his life: a Russian assassin, hellbent on killing Mac and everyone he cares for. Now Mac must uncover the identity of the killer, face him in combat, and at the same time lead people in battle against the largest underwater force ever assembled. It’s Mac’s final test, and to win the war, he must use every tool at his disposal, including the most surprising and devastating underwater weapons ever invented.

If Mac fails, all hope is lost for the future of human colonization on the ocean floors.

But the assassin could be anyone …

Watch your back, Mac.
