Ryan Coogler is Developing a New X-Files TV Series

I love this series.

I had read this news a while back, and thought it very worthwhile to report here at Life After Gateway.

Ryan Coogler, director of Sinners, Black Panther, and Creed, is rebooting one of my favourite TV shows of all time, The X-Files. Sinners is widely considered one of the best movies of 2025, which Coogler also wrote. The rebooted FBI-Agents-investigating-supernatural-events-and-monsters is in phenomenal hands.

The original series began in 1993 and also consisted of two motion pictures and two more recent seasons, in 2016 and 2018. The show consisted of an overall “mythology” focusing on alien incursions on Earth and US involvement/knowledge of the invaders, and also standalone episodes featuring supernatural events that Agent Scully would try to explain away with science. It was a visionary show with a fantastic cast of characters and wonderful writing. In particular, I enjoyed the second movie, I Want to Believe, which was a standalone story … a modern-day Frankenstein which involved the conflict between science and religion. For me, it was in the same genre as Silence of the Lambs and Prisoners, and although flawed, is the series’ crowning achievement. Critics and audiences at the time did not appreciate it, sadly.

Coogler is an exceptional talent. In a recent article at Variety, he speaks of how his mother’s love for the series has spurred on his desire to reboot it. Since Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny are very much alive and well (and prospering), I would make a plea to Coogler to please involve them as the stars of the show and bring in new talent to accompany them on their adventures. Skinner (Mitch Pileggi), their reluctant supervisor, is also an essential component. Coogler, in the interview with Variety, said:

“I want to do right by her and the fans. My mom has read some of the stuff I wrote for it. She’s fired up.”
