Ryan Coogler’s X-Files Reboot is Confirmed and the First Star Cast

Hulu has now given the greenlight for this project, and filming on the pilot is moving forward.

I previously posted about the reboot HERE. I have been anxiously awaiting news so I could share it with you at Life After Gateway. Ryan Coogler is currently experiencing a surge of massive success. His amazing film, Sinners, just broke an Oscar record with sixteen nominations, which is the most in movie history. I ranked it as my second favourite of the year. It’s that good. When word came that he was developing a reboot of the X-Files, it immediately attracted my attention. I am a huge fan of the show, having watched it since it aired in the early 1990s. I’m also a fan of the movies and the more recent seasons as well. I, along with every other fan, am wondering the obvious: Are Mulder and Scully coming back?

Here’s what we know so far:

Hulu has greenlit the pilot
Jennifer Yale is the showrunner. She is the executive producer of The Copenhagen Test, which stars Simu Liu and Melissa Barrera.
Danielle Deadwyler is starring in the new X-Files. She is the first person officially cast in the show. She was previously seen in Carry-On and Station Eleven. She plays one half of a duo investigating unexplained cases. According to The Hollywood Reporter:

Two highly decorated but vastly different FBI agents form an unlikely bond when they are assigned to a long-shuttered division devoted to cases involving unexplained phenomena.

Chris Carter, the original show’s creator and executive producer, will be a “non-writing executive producer” on the new show
Coogler’s mother is a massive fan of the original show
So far, there is no other word on other casting … no word on Duchovny and Anderson

I am excited about this project. The possibilities for the show are endless — any type of supernatural, alien, monster, mutant, or new technology is fair game — and the foundational stories are ripe for further investigation. Former stars can appear, previous characters might re-emerge, previous storylines followed up on, and so much more. New stories, new conspiracies, and a new (or former) mythology can be included. Coogler is a great talent and I have faith in this project. I’d love to see the original characters, including Mulder, Scully, Skinner, The Lone Gunmen, Krycek (???) and others return. Bring it on.
