Are You Ready to Visit Elm Street Again?

Yes, it’s true. Variety is reporting the news. A Nightmare on Elm Street is being rebooted.
There is currently a lot of movement regarding the “Holy Trinity” of slasher films.
Halloween has a new video game on the horizon and a new movie in the works.
Friday the 13th has a new TV series about to air.
And now comes news of an agreement between Paramount and Wes Craven’s estate to create a new film based on the original screenplay.
The Story
Teenager Nancy Thompson must uncover the dark truth concealed by her parents after she and her friends become targets of the spirit of a serial killer with a bladed glove in their dreams, in which if they die, it kills them in real life.
The original 1984 film was a watershed movie in the horror genre. It tapped into the very real (at the time) societal curiosity about the meaning of dreams, targeted a teen audience, and told an original and gripping story about a heinous killer and the crime a group of parents committed in the name of vigilante justice. The movie currently has a 7.4 on IMDB with 294,000 votes. Audiences loved the film at the time, and it spawned a franchise of nine movies (so far). A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors is especially loved, and filmmakers Chuck Russell (Eraser), Wes Craven, Stephen Hopkins (Predator 2) and Renny Harlin (Die Hard 2: Die Harder) are associated with these sequels.
“One, Two, Freddy’s Coming For You …”
I previously posted a story about the possibility of Jim Carrey portraying Freddy; there is no news about Freddy’s casting … yet. Chuck Russell is the person responsible for this story; he thinks Carrey would make a great Freddy, and I agree, to a point. He’d definitely chew up the scenery and spew a fountain of morbid jokes. He’d have to dig into his darker side to commit some of the grisly murders in the film, however. Could he do this?

“Three, Four, Better Lock Your Door …”
An Iconic Film with Iconic Moments
If you haven’t seen the original, you should check it out. It featured an iconic performance by Robert Englund as Freddy, John Savage (Enter the Dragon) as the police chief and Nancy’s dad, and a very young Johnny Depp in his first role, as Glen. One of the best elements of the movie was that sometimes it was hard to tell if you were watching a dream, or watching something occurring in the “real” world of the tormented teens.
There are many iconic moments in the first film, including:
- The blood waterfall
- The body pulled through a window
- Freddy’s glove
- Freddy’s laugh
- The bathtub scene
- The jail cell death
- The nursery rhyme song children on the street sing
Here’s the trailer for the original film. As more news arrives, I’ll post it here at Life After Gateway. Watch this space.
