John Carpenter’s The Thing Has Been Added to the National Film Registry

I have written and spoken about this watershed film many times.
Now, the Library of Congress in the United States has chosen The Thing as one of their twenty-five movies to include in the National Film Registry, along with this year’s other selections, which include Inception, Glory, and The Truman Show. These films are included “due to their cultural, historic or aesthetic importance to preserve the nation’s film heritage.”
At the Library of Congress website, they write this of The Thing:
Moody, stark, often funny and always chilling, this science fiction horror classic follows Antarctic scientists who uncover a long-dormant, malevolent extraterrestrial presence. “The Thing” revolutionized horror special effects and offers a brutally honest portrait of the results of paranoia and exhaustion when the unknown becomes inescapable. “The Thing” deftly adapts John W. Campbell’s 1938 novella “Who Goes There?” and influenced “Stranger Things” and “Reservoir Dogs.” It remains a tense, thrilling and profoundly unsettling work of cinema.
I recently spoke with the guys at the Re-Creative Podcast about The Thing here: LINK
I’ve also written about the importance of this Science Fiction Horror film here, here, and here.
Congratulations to John Carpenter, Bill Lancaster, Rob Bottin, Dean Cundy, Kurt Russell, Keith David, Stuart Cohen, Larry Franco, Ennio Morricone, and everyone else involved in this stellar production. Here’s the IMDB listing with the film’s full credits. It is currently rated 8.2 with 520,000 votes.
Of special note is John W. Campbell Jr.’s original novella, Who Goes There?, on which Lancaster based the screenplay. It’s a remarkable work. (Story continues below.)

In recent days, Carpenter has commented on this news via his Instagram account. Of special note are his words regarding TK Carter, who passed away recently at the young age of 69. He said this:
As you may have heard, “The Thing” has been added to the Library of Congress. We made the movie to push against the edges of what we could pull off, and it carries that strain in its bones. Seeing it now treated with the same care and reverence we had making it means a great deal to me and everyone who brought it to life.
I especially want to remember TK Carter, who brought heart and humor into that desolate, frozen place and should be standing here with us today sharing in this recognition.
Thank you to everyone who continues to keep it alive.

BONUS: Here’s one of the best scenes in The Thing. The tension, paranoia, and fear ramps up and the Agatha Christie-ish nature of the film grows even more deadly. Who goes there? (Credit to YouTube channel VuAjEm.)
