New Trailer Alert: Unabomber

Here’s the trailer for a new Netflix film, Unabomber, for you today at Life After Gateway.
I grew up during this period and it captivated people’s attention … for two decades. Here’s my short summary:
TSJ’s Short History of the Unabomber
During the period 1978-1995, a serial bomber was active in the United States. Using the postal system and small package bombs, he targeted individuals and generally caused chaos in law-enforcement circles. Originally, investigators believed the culprit was focused on universities, as the first two bombs occurred at Northwestern University. His third attack occurred on an American Airlines flight, and together, these three bombs gave him his moniker: UN-A-Bomber. UN for “university” and A for “airline.” Eventually his bombs began to target a variety of other occupations, businesses, professors, and executives.

He also mailed newspapers, outlining his motives, and even sent an entire essay about his aims, which he called his ‘Manifesto.’ The bombs often held fake clues, including initials and notes, designed to distract officials. Years of examing the pattern failed to identify suspects. It wasn’t until the manifesto was published in the Washington Post that a family member recognized the writing and pointed investigators in the correct direction: to Ted Kaczynski, a brilliant mathematician and former Harvard student. He was living as a recluse who had shunned society and was living in a remote cabin in the woods. His aims were to target people that, in his mind, were contributing to the destruction of the natural environment. In essence, he was a domestic eco-terrorist. In the end, Kaczynski killed three and injured/maimed twenty-three others. He ended up in prison, and recently took his own life in his cell.
As an aside, there is a mini-series about the hunt for the Unabomber called Manhunt: Unabomber, which I highly recommend. It stars Sam Worthington.
