The Newest Christmas Movie on my Christmas Viewing List
Let me put Violent Night on your Christmas radar if you haven’t already seen it.
“Time for some season’s beatings.” — Santa
This movie a lot of fun. I first saw it two years ago around this time. I was expecting a bit of violence, but Violent Night really blew me away. I laughed out loud again and again. Starring David Harbour of Stranger Things fame, he plays a Santa who is on the ragged edge and struggling to reclaim his Christmas spirit. Throw in a robbery, some mercenaries, a lot of blood, and it becomes a story that is hard not to watch. One scene in particular held me in a deep belly laugh for a good five minutes. It is a musical montage (featuring a Christmas anthem Canadians will find familiar) as Santa kills some baddies in grotesque and amusing ways. This is a movie for grownups, make no mistake.
It’s not perfect; the story is one-note and the Home Alone elements are the weakest part of the film, but it is a refreshing Christmas tale for mom and dad, and a welcome escape from the usual innocence of the holiday season. There’s a sequel coming, and I’m looking forward to it.

Watch it at night while the kids are in bed. It’s not very high on my Christmas viewing list; frankly, it lacks the character elements of films like Lethal Weapon or Die Hard, but the musical montage alone ensures this one gets a yearly viewing in my house. That plus the entertaining violence means it has earned a place on the list.
