X-Files Reboot News: David Duchovny Speaks

I just want to temper your expectations before you get to the article …
… because there’s not really a whole lot of fantastic news to report to you today at Life After Gateway.
However, before we get to it, just a brief recap of what we know about Ryan Coogler’s (Sinners) reboot of Hulu’s X-Files:
The Recap
I previously reported on the X-Files Reboot here, here, here, and here. We know the following about this show:
- Hulu has greenlit the pilot, and filming starts in May 2026 in Vancouver
- Jennifer Yale is the showrunner. She is the executive producer of The Copenhagen Test, which stars Simu Liu and Melissa Barrera.
- Danielle Deadwyler (Station Eleven) and Himesh Patel (Yesterday) are starring in the new X-Files.
- According to The Hollywood Reporter:
Two highly decorated but vastly different FBI agents form an unlikely bond when they are assigned to a long-shuttered division devoted to cases involving unexplained phenomena.
- Chris Carter, the original show’s creator and executive producer, will be a “non-writing executive producer” on the new show
- Coogler’s mother is a massive fan of the original show
- As I reported earlier, Gillian Anderson has read the pilot script, is a fan of Coogler, and Coogler has fingers crossed that she will return as Dana Scully
- This aspect is a guess on my part, but it’s based on strong evidence: It appears the reboot will focus on two brand new FBI agents, and it’s likely that Mulder and Scully will appear to provide context or advice

The Duchovny News
And now we have the news, brought to us by The Hollywood Reporter, who recently interviewed David Duchovny about his current and upcoming projects. It’s not promising, especially considering that the actor has been busy, and filming on the X-Files Reboot starts next month.

During the interview with James Hibberd, this exchange occurred:
Q: Gillian Anderson suggested in an interview that she read the pilot script. Have you?
Duchovny: No, I haven’t. I’ve spoken to Ryan, and I have a general sense of what it is, but I haven’t read the script.
Q: Have they asked you to appear?
Duchovny: There have been talks about certain things, but there’s nothing concrete at this point.
Q: Hypothetically, what would be your feeling about stepping into that character again should the opportunity present itself?
Duchovny: I don’t know what the world of his show is. I don’t know if my character exists in that show. It’s all hypothetical to me, so I can’t really address it.
You can head over to The Hollywood Reporter to read the entire interview, which has more information about Duchovny’s upcoming projects.
It’s not compelling news — in fact, it’s slightly disappointing at this point — but I told you I would keep you informed of anything related to this reboot. Fan expectations remain extremely high for this project.
I wish this new crew all the best. I am a huge fan of the original. I am hoping to see the original Mulder and Scully back together, and I am trusting Ryan Coogler (Sinners) also feels the same way. This show is in good hands. The X-Files inspires me and that’s why I continue to write about it here.
As more news comes in, I’ll post it at Life After Gateway.
